January  2011

A Look Through
the Rearview Mirror

By Dave Hutchison

This has been a busy winter for the crew here at Ragtops & Roadsters. Our shop is full with winter projects as we work toward readying some "drivers" and finishing some projects for the spring driving season.

It’s not all work, though. We have attended several club holiday parties. The local Jaguar Club Holiday Party was held at the Whitemarsh Country Club in early December. Fewer members attended than the last couple of years; however, many brought their everyday Jaguars to the luncheon.

Tim McNair made sure we all had a great time with “The Car Guys” group at Sola in Bryn Mawr.  The food was top shelf and the car stories never ended. Some people cancelled as snow was predicted to start during dinner. When I called to check in, I was reminded that we are all “Car Guys”…..what’s a little snow?

  A Look Through
the Windscreen

I can already tell that 2011 will be a very active year as new events are constantly being added to the vintage car calendar.

The Concours de Elegance of the Eastern United States is back on the calendar again after taking a break in 2010.  The rich 20-year history of this show will lay the foundation for a great event to be held May 20-22 at Skytop Lodge in Mt. Pocono. Check out their website for more details as they become available.

We will support the Concours de Elegance by showing some of the same cars we will have on display at the Philadelphia International Auto Show (January 29 - February 6). I plan to be at the exhibit most of the week, then I’ll be off to Daytona Beach for the 2011 British Motor Trade Association National Convention to speak about social networking and how Facebook is making our collector car world smaller.

The AACA National Convention is always held in Philadelphia at the Sheraton Hotel on the second weekend in February (this year it's February 11-12). They hold quite a few very informative tech sessions and we recommend attending if you can. We will be there showing a recently finished example of a 1935 Hudson Terraplane from our sister shop, Pollock Auto Restoration.  Check out the AACA website for a full schedule of their events.

The following weekend  (February 18-20) is the Atlantic City Classic Car Show and Auction.  Some British cars and usually some interesting stuff goes across the auction block.

If you are a Lotus enthusiast, the Philadelphia Area Lotus Society (PALS) will be holding its  annual planning meeting on February26.

I look forward to seeing you at some of the winter 2011 events.

The Black Tie Tailgate at the Philly Auto Show to benefit the Center for Autism Research at The Children's Hospital is Friday, January 28.

Around the Shop

Let’s take a walk around our shop in Perkasie.

This is a 1963 Jaguar Series I E-Type Coupe that is having a modern 5-speed transmission and air conditioning installed. It will be a beautiful driver when it’s finished. Now that the metal restoration is complete, we expect to apply the British Racing Green paint in the next month or so, just in time for spring. With the Biscuit interior, it will look sharp!

We're working on a Vignale-bodied Triumph, known as the Italia 2000. We plan to give it full Concours-level restoration, similar to the car pictured here. It’s the third one we’ve done in the last few years. The plan is to restore it to Concours status in time for it to be included in some top shows in 2012.

Finally, we have a pair of Jensens in the shop, one a Jensen-Healey and the other a 1975 Jensen-GT (pictured). This Jensen is one of 509 shooting-brakes built before the company went into receivership in 1976. It is having a new interior fitted and a new dash installed, complete with a Vintage Air system.

Great Resource from SEMA

Here’s a great resource for car enthusiasts… everything you need to register and title your hobby car in all 50 states.

The folks at SEMA have done a great job compiling definitions, laws, exemptions, and forms across the country. All you have to do is click on a state to get everything you need.

SEMA Sets July 8 as
"Collector Car Appreciation Day"

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) councils have announced July 8, 2011 as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.”

The date marks the second commemoration in what will become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.  SEMA and its councils are now working to secure a Congressional resolution to recognize the day’s significance.
