Each year the show attracts visitors from all over the United States and many countries throughout the world. Some of the most unusual cars and parts can be found at Hershey. If you love antique cars, Hershey is the place to be. The weather for the next couple of days looks great, so plan come out and stop by our tent on the Chocolate Field at CY 44-45. Look for the Union Jack Flag! Admission is free and don't forget to wear a good pair of walking shoes!

Coatesville Invitational Vintage Automobile Grand Prix

Last December the City Manager of Coatesville, Michael Trio, saw the racing movie "Rush". Despite not being a car guy, he still enjoyed the film. Little did he know, he was about to be converted! Part of his responsibility as City Manager is to develop and support plans for the revitalization and redevelopment the city of 13,000 residents. While looking at some downtown property he met Dick Miles and toured his garages. This is when the idea was born to have a street race. Yes, a STREET RACE in Coatesville!
Nine months later with the help of John Lawless, Bill O'Connell and countless volunteers, it became a reality as over thirty racecars and ten vintage motorcycles in trailers rumbled onto Main Street where "Pit Road" was set up on a section of the Old Lincoln Highway. Oil belching antiques from 1910 to the 1969 fire breathing twelve cylinder Ferrari Daytona lined the streets. Could this be Watkins Glen in the early fifties?
Racers were advised in a drivers meeting that this was to be an "exhibition" style event and to keep speeds reasonable. Above all, safety was strongly emphasized! Domestic, Italian, German, British cars and bikes ran several heats throughout the day. The entire 2.2 mile circuit was lined with police, fencing and hay-bales that were used to create chicanes before 90 degrees turns to slow the racers.
With the help from 35 local and more county / state police that lined the track, it was safe event! Sponsors and vendors including Ragtops & Roadsters were there in force in Gateway Park. About 5000 people attended and I am pleased to report that this was successful event from both a safety and financial perspective and the city planners have a five year contract. The drivers were well behaved and good feedback has also come in from the city residents. At the end of the day Michael beaming as he said "It exceeded my expectations by miles!"  And so he should!  We will see you next year.

Fall Getaway

Above is sunrise over the Potomac river from the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, WV. Another Fall Getaway is in the books! This year we met in West Chester and headed south west towards Frederick, Md. After getting lost and found and a quick lunch stop we arrived at the Antietam Battle Field on the 154th anniversary of the battle where America lost the most solders in battle in any single day in history.  A very sobering place where we got a wonderful tour by Matt Borders, a very enthusiastic and passionate employee of Eastern National. His depth of knowledge and respect for this solemn historic site was very impressive!
Burnside bridge then and now undergoing major repairs. The sunken road really is sunken from years of travel. On Saturday we visited the historic town of Harper's Ferry.
On Sunday, we drove north to Gettysburg for a quick visit of their museum and to see a show of the Cyclorama that dates back to 1884: a must see. It was a great trip!
