The Best of Britain at The Simeone Foundation Museum
"British Racing at Le Mans"

Preview Party Jan 3rd THIS FRIDAY NIGHT
Show runs from January 4th- Feb 2nd
This Friday night, award-winning automotive historian John Nikas, author of Rule Britannia: "When British Sports Car Saved a Nation" will host a special discussion on Britain's triumphs and travails at the Circuit de la Sarthe at the Preview Party starting at 6 PM. There will also be a very special addition to the 2020 Best of Britain "British Racing at Le Mans" exhibition..
Fashion icon and noted collector Ralph Lauren has agreed to send two luminaries from his collection for the opening festivities: The 1929 Blower Bentley driven by Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin, leader of the Bentley Boys, and the 1955 'works' Jaguar D-type, one of only ten 'long nose' examples and the first fitted with mechanical petrol injection that ran Le Mans in 1957.
Available for viewing only on the opening night only from 6:00-8:30 PM, this is a special opportunity to see two true legendary Le Mans race cars up close!  These historically significant cars are rarely displayed for public viewing, so don’t miss this rare opportunity. Sponsored by Ragtops & Roadsters, we believe this will be a night to remember! Click here of more details about the Preview Party
Regular admission will apply for this special event $8, $10 or $12.

Motorcars Delivered... Ready for Driving!

by: Dave Hutchison

We last saw this 1974 Jaguar E-Type about a year ago when it was delivered to our happy client. When sitting for a while, it was reported that the garage was smelling of gasoline.  After diagnosis, we removed the fuel tank, replaced the original evaporation lines and reassembled the fuel system in the boot. After a coil replacement and tuning this cat is back home behaving.
We last saw this 1979 Lotus Esprit about ten years ago when we completed a full service. Since that time, our client, who is a very busy man, put just under 800 miles on the clock!  After a safety Inspection, we removed and replaced old fuel, replaced cracked steering rack boots, did an alignment and changed all the fluids.  This LOTUS needs to be driven!
This low mileage, 1980 Fiat 2000 was a recent purchase for our client's wife as it is exactly like the one she drove in college! The body is in very good shape, however it had been sitting and it needed new tires, a suspension rebuild, brake work, a new timing/water pump belt and we repaired a broken door hinge. This car is now a very nice driver and we wish these folks a great 2020 driving season!
This Series II 1969  E-Type Coupe was just purchased by a new owner. He brought the car in to be looked over, so after a full evaluation, we determined that is a solid car that needs some attention. We balanced and tuned the triple carbs, repaired the vacuum advance and now it runs much better. We also rebuilt a replacement steering column and installed new seat belts.

Ford v Ferrari

by: Dave Hutchison

Last fall we received an invitation from the Simeone Museum to see the Philadelphia premier of the soon-to-be-released Ford v Ferrari. Mike, Bill and Ray from RD Enterprises and myself all took the train down to Philadelphia and made the short walk to the Philadelphia Film Center located downtown on Chestnut Street. After a cheese steak, we joined 400 gearheads outside with great anticipation.  Before the film started, Dr. Simeone addressed the audience and thanked us all for coming out!
After the show, Dr. Simeone was interviewed by Jessica Kartalija from CBS 3.

I am very pleased to report that our group and most everyone we spoke with were very impressed with entire film, which runs a little over 2 hours. For the most part, this film accurately tells the brilliant story of the encounter between Ford and Ferrari at Le Mans in the mid-sixties. Now, there were a couple of technical inaccuracies that the purists can point out, however, this is a feature film, shot and produced to entertain, not as a documentary, and was very entertaining!

My favorite scene was when Ken Miles, who was played by Christian Bale, walked out on the track after dark with his son Peter. He knelt down on the track reached out and asked Peter, “Look out there, out there is the perfect lap. No mistakes. Every gear-change, every corner, perfect. Do you see it?” “I think so.” “Most people can’t. Most people don’t even know it’s out there, but it is. It’s there.” The producers managed to capture and presented in layman's terms what anyone who has been on a track is striving towards..."the perfect lap". Overall all it was a great film that hopefully will reach the masses and I look forward to seeing it again in an IMAX theater as this is most certainly a big screen film!

Spirit of Competition Simeone Museum

by: Dave Hutchison

As in the past couple of years, we have attended the Spirit of Competition banquet almost every year since the museum opened 2009. This year's honoree was Emerson Fittapaldi. While a slide show played in the background, Bill Warner from the Amelia Island Concours interviewed Emmo about his entire racing career from his humble beginnings with a Lotus Seven through his wins at Indianapolis! During the Q & A, I was fortunate enough to ask him what car he felt was the best to work with and what was his favorite team.  He immediately replied that the Lotus Type 72 was the best handling and most predictable and it was also campaigned for four season, something that was very unusual even back in the 70s.  He said the best race team was none better than Penske during his days at Indy. He was very friendly and open to conversation after the presentation. This is always a very interesting and enjoyable night!

CarSmarts Radio!

I first met Steve Saffian at the Philadelphia Auto Show a couple of years ago when I asked him "What's in your garage?"® We chatted and several month later he invited me to be a guest on his weekly show. So last weekend I was finally able to meet with Steve and drove down to Bala Cynwyd on Saturday morning.
Steve is the host and producer of CarSmarts Radio and I was his last guest of 2019.  The format was simple. Steve made it very relaxing and it was broadcast live on 610 AM at 11 AM.  If you haven't heard me talk enough about cars and car events in the area you can catch the interview by live streaming it at this link 610espn.com (scroll down) I was told by some 'friends' that I have a face for radio!

Restoration Project Update: 1963 Jaguar E-Type OTS

This 1963 Jaguar E-Type OTS has now had extensive metal repairs completed, was prepped and just freshly painted by our sister shop, Pollock Auto Restoration.  The engine has been faithfully rebuilt to Concours standards here at Ragtops & Roadsters and we just finished the rear suspension sub-assembly. Now the fun part begins, as we carefully build this opalescent silver grey  E-Type with a red interior to JCNA judging standards.  Stay tuned!
We are here to help out with fall / winter projects. Now is the time to take care of the deferred maintenance, restoration, preservation, and upgrade needs that are on your car's "to do" list! Click here to send an e-mail to dave@ragtops.com or just call us 215-257-1202 to schedule an appointment. We are currently scheduling appointments in late January through the winter, so it's not too late to plan for repair or restoration work soon, so that you can be enjoying your classic in the spring!
On our website we have recently listed more of our client's British cars looking for new homes. Click on our For Sale page to see current listings. Click here to see NEW pictures of this very clean 1966 TRIUMPH TR4A IRS with Overdrive (asking price just reduced to $27,500) looking for a new garage!
